Moths
The gentlest thing I can imagine are the antennae of moths. They look like tiny feathers or soft ferns made up of intricate branches, fractions of a millimetre thick. These antennae are astoundingly sensitive. A male silk moth can detect a potential mate at a distance of 4.5km. It can sense a single molecule of the female’s pheromone. Apparently 60 molecules are enough to arouse it. Such antennae were the starting point for these paintings. In my personal iconography moths stand for attentiveness and gentleness. That is what I want people to think about when they look at these paintings.
