The original meaning of ‘Ether’ referred to ‘the blue sky above the clouds’. Over time, its meaning evolved, and it transitioned to describe a hypothetical substance through which light could move. The ether came to be viewed as the singular carrier of many physical processes and scientists went to search for this elusive substance.

They never found it.

Just as scientists once searched for the elusive ‘ether,' the works in this exhibition embark on playful attempts to define the intangible essence that characterises painting as a medium. In an effort of self redefinition the paintings of Emma Kling, Veronika Beringer, Lorenz Kunath and Matthias Ramsey reach out, beyond the conventional boundaries of the canvas to situate themselves beside themselves.

Manche überfällt er schlagartig, andere quälen sich stundenlang damit ab, ihn zu finden: es geht um den Schlaf. Der Schlaf gilt als Schleuse zu unserem Unterbewusstsein und als Quell tieferer Erkenntnis. Und doch hat er in unserer schönen neuen Arbeitswelt deutlich an Prestige verloren. Seit Jahrtausenden beschäftigen sich Philosophinnen und Philosophen, Künstlerinnen und Künstler und Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler mit ihm – und immer noch birgt er ein Geheimnis. Nicht selten ist er von unangenehmen Störgeräuschen begleitet. Ohne ihn könnten wir nicht überleben – und doch gilt er als des Todes kleiner Bruder: der Schlaf. In seiner wachrüttelnden Doku nähert sich Regisseur Stefan Wolner diesem alltäglichen und doch verrätselten Lebensbegleiter aus unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven: Was weiß die Forschung über den Schlaf und wonach sucht sie immer noch? Wie können wir unsere Träume steuern und warum sind diese seit der Antike ein zeitloses Thema? Und wie nützen Künstlerinnen und Künstler – von den Surrealisten bis zu heutigen Schlafperformerinnen und Schlafperformer– den Schlaf für ihre Werke?

Featuring a range of artists working in various mediums, the exhibition examines the complex relationship between biology and art, highlighting the ways in which these seemingly disparate fields can inform and enrich one another. Through a dialogue between the works on display and the audiences engaging with them, the exhibition explores how art and science can collaborate to create new forms of living beings that interact with the audience.

leerstoff is a project and exhibition organized by Nora Eckhart, resulting in numerous group discussions since last fall and a week residency in Lower Austria in August.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, Georgia underwent a series of radical socio-political transformations. Over the past 30 years the capital city of Tbilisi has been the centre stage of these political, social and achitectural upheavals. The rapid modernization of the city has created a strange fusion of old and new. It’s historical structures coexist with sprawling brutalist architecture of concrete, steel and glass. Our project is an intensive and critical examination of the urban space of Tbilisi with visual art as its vehicle and with the aim of inspiring visions of the city’s future. In the medium of sculpture and large-scale installation the invited artists are developing an imaginary city of Tbilisi - in a collaborative process they are exploring the connections between people, places and nature and are reflecting on the future of the city together with the local audience.
